When paying using a money order, you could be curious as to whether or not the recipient has received and paid the check. Money orders can be traced but doing so may require time and money.
In contrast to personal checks, money orders are not associated with a specific individual's bank account. They must instead be purchased with cash. Money orders paid for in currency will not appear in your bank records as cleared funds. However, the issuer of the money order might be contacted to inquire about a specific payment.
When it comes to tracking cash transfers, you have a few options. If your mail has been lost or stolen, you can report it to the USPS by filling out an online form and paying a small fee. The local post office is another option.
You can contact MoneyGram by filling out their online form, calling their toll-free number (1-800-926-7400), or going to a physical facility.
You can transfer money using Western Union by calling 1-800-999-9660 or completing an online form for a cost of up to $15. To help you make an informed decision, we've included detailed descriptions of each of these alternatives below.
A copy of the endorsed money order (indicating who cashed or deposited it and when) or a notice that the money order has not yet been cashed is usually sent by the issuer after around 30 days. Money orders can sometimes be voided for a refund if they have not yet been cashed. What this means in practice differs from issuer to issuer.
A receipt detailing the purchase of a money order is customary. You'll need to provide them with the money order number and the total so they can keep tabs on the transaction. Likely, the money order's current status can be checked online using the service's website.
Enter the issued quantity and serial number. You'll also need the physical location's phone number if you purchase a money order from the United States Postal Service.
Money orders issued by the United States Postal Service require the user to submit a Money Order Inquiry form at a local post office. The money order's status can be tracked online, too. To complete either format, you will need the original purchase receipt with the money order number, amount, and post office information.
MoneyGram money orders are somewhat simpler to track. You can reach MoneyGram by calling their toll-free number, 1-800-926-9400, or by filling out their online contact form.
If you know the money order number and amount, the system should tell you whether or not the money order has been cashed. You will need to fill out a form and visit a local MoneyGram office if you do not have the transaction number.
Fill out the Money Order Research Request form if you need a copy of the paid money order and do not have your receipt. An additional $30 will be added to cover the cost of administration.
Money orders cannot be canceled with the US Postal Service; replacements can only be made in the event of loss or theft. If a Western Union money order has not yet been cashed, it might be canceled.
It would be best if you took it back to the store from which you originally purchased it. If you bought your Western Union money order online or via their mobile app, you could cancel it similarly.
Retail outlets like supermarkets, gas stations, and check cashing services frequently issue Western Union and MoneyGram money orders. Even if your money order wasn't published by one of the institutions listed here (like a bank or credit union), you might still be able to trace it. It may be less hassle than usual, especially if your bank is on the smaller side. It may not be necessary to fill out any paperwork; instead, you can give the appropriate number a call.
Your bank will process any money order payments you receive. To receive the money, you can either cash the money order or deposit it into your bank account like a cheque.
